Women?s Volleyball Sweeps IUPUI, Climbs To 7-0

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team improved to 7-0 with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-11) sweep of IUPUI (1-8) Tuesday evening at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals' seven-match winning streak to open the year is the second-longest in program history, trailing only the 10-match streak in 1973.
"It was a tough battle tonight," said Ball State head coach Steve Shondell. "I thought IUPUI came in ready to play. While they only have one win to their credit, they look like a team with a more victories. They really made us fight from behind those first two sets and challenged us. Fortunately, we were able to rise to the challenge in win those two sets. I thought we came out a lot sharper in set three."
In the win, freshman outside hitter Kylee Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North H.S.) turned in another solid all-around performance, racking up a match-best 13 kills to go along with nine digs and a career-best four service aces.
Also turning in double-digit kills for the Cardinals was junior middle blocker Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.), who blasted 10 markers while posting a .529 (10-1-17) attack percentage. She also collected four block assists, four digs and a pair of aces.
In all, eight different Cardinals scored at least one kill in the contest, as junior setter Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) led the team to a .289 (46-13-114) hitting mark. She also finished the match with eight digs, five kills and an ace.
In the backcourt, senior libero Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) added a match-high 19 digs, as the Cardinals tallied a 56-48 advantage in digs. Freshman defensive specialist Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls H.S.) added seven digs and two aces, helping BSU to a 9-3 lead from the servce line.
Dana Gardner and Lindsey Weber paced the Jaguars with eight kills each, while Shari Bernhardt added a team-best 13 digs. Ball State continued its defensive dominance, limiting the IUPUI attack to a .112 (30-17-116) rate of success for the match.
The visitors from Indianapolis jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the opening set, only to have the Cardinals battle back and tie the frame at 11 on a kill from McGinnis. A Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) kill on the next rally gave BSU its first lead of the set at 12-11. After IUPUI regained a slim 14-13 edge, two kills from Brandl surrounding a Fredrich service ace sparked a 4-0 BSU rally, pushing the score to 17-14.
Ball State controlled the scoreboard from there, as a kill from freshman outside hitter Whitney Heeres (Flushing, Mich./Flushing Senior H.S.) gave the Cardinals set-point at 24-19. Junior defensive specialist Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) followed with her first kill of the season to give BSU the 25-19 opening-set victory.
IUPUI jumped out to another early lead in the second game, as a Brittany Anglemyer kill gave the visitors a 6-1 advantage. Ball State answered the charge again, tying the game at 11 for the second consecutive time thanks to a Brandl smash. From there, the teams battled to a 20-20 stalemate before a Brandl ace and Philips kill helped give BSU a 23-20 edge.
A kill from junior middle blocker Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) gave the Cardinals set-point at 24-21, while a Baker kill ended the set at 25-22.
The Cardinals took control early in the third game, quickly establishing a 7-3 advantage. BSU took its first 10-point lead at 17-7, before winning the game at 25-11 on junior middle blocker Alexis Shonkwiler's (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook H.S.) first kill of the season.
