Softball Notches Two Academic All-MAC Spots
June 03, 2010 | Softball
This is the third consecutive year that Milian has been named to the team and she is joined by Eastern Michigan's Jenny Scherer in accomplishing the feat. Two-time selections include Heather Bauer and Alex Feltes of Akron and Jill Schultz of Central Michigan. This marks Barkley's first selection.
Milian, who owns a 3.96 cumulative grade point average as a secondary mathematics education major, will graduate from Ball State in December after student teaching in the sixth grade at Yorktown Middle School. Ball State's ace for four seasons, Milian capped her career as the Most Valuable Player at the MAC Tournament and was selected to the 2010 All-MAC Tournament Team after recording a 4-0 tournament record and maintaining a 0.25 ERA. The winningest pitcher in program history and co-owner of most career victories in the MAC, Milian led the 2010 Cardinals to a consecutive MAC regular season title, shared with Kent State, and the program's second-ever MAC Tournament title which was accompanied by an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional in Knoxville, Tenn. - the program's first trip in 12 years.
Milian has also been recognized nationally for her success as a student-athlete and is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V selection and the first Ball State player in six years to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Softball Third Team.
Barkley, an exercise science major with an emphasis in health and fitness, has maintained a 3.58 cumulative grade point average while starting every game in her career at shortstop for Ball State. The junior was selected to both the 2010 MAC All-Tournament Team and All-MAC Second Team. She was also the MAC Player of the Year in 2009 and was a First Team All-MAC selection and NFCA All-Mideast Region First Team selection in that season. In addition, Barkley is Ball State's single season leader in at bats with 222 in 2008 and co-owns the school's single season record for most games played in one season, 68, in 2008.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
