Madaris Grant Named Student Assistant Football Coach
June 28, 2010 | Football
Madaris Grant, a fifth-year senior on the Ball State football team in 2009, will serve as a student assistant coach for the Cardinals in 2010, according to Ball State head coach Stan Parrish.
In 2009, Grant was named one of Ball State's co-captains for the season and started the opener vs. North Texas. He suffered a season ending knee injury in the season opener on the first play in the first offensive series of the game. He applied for a medical redshirt and sixth season of eligibility but was denied by the NCAA.
"We are very excited to have Madaris Grant as a part of our coaching staff," Parrish says. "Although we are disappointed he will not be able to compete as a player, we are glad he is staying to assist the program."
Grant is able to serve as a student assistant coach due to a new NCAA legislation, which allows a student-athlete who has exhausted his eligibility and who meets a selected criteria established by the NCAA to serve as a student assistant coach. The new legislation is effective Aug. 1, 2010.
Grant, who redshirted as a freshman in 2005, played in all 11 games for the Cardinals in 2006 as a redshirt freshman. In 2007, he started 11 games and played in all 13 contests to earn a second letter. As a junior in 2008, Grant played in all 14 games and started 12 contests to earn his third letter. He managed a career high five catches for a career best 92 yards vs. Eastern Michigan as a junior in 2008.
