Baseball's Ian Nielsen Named Academic All-MAC

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State sophomore first baseman Ian Nielsen (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team the league office announced Wednesday. The 17-man team was voted on by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives from among a list of student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics.
Nielsen, an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District selection, owns a 3.83 grade-point average in health education. He earned Second Team All-MAC honors this season after helping the Cardinals to a 29-29 overall record and a 19-8 mark in league play.
Nielsen finished the season tied for third on the team with a .328 batting average and was third on the team with 75 hits. He drove in 58 runs on the year and recorded a .511 slugging percentage, courtesy of 11 home runs and nine doubles. He becomes the first Cardinal to earn Academic All-MAC honors since Tyler Pritchard in 2008.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
