Outdoor Track & Field Places Two On Academic All-MAC Squad

MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State senior distance runner Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) and redshirt sophomore multi-event specialist Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) have been named to the 2010 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field team as voted on by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
"We are very proud of both Sarah and Thekla for earning Academic All-MAC accolades," said BSU head coach Randy Heisler. "Both work extremely hard in the classroom and on the track, and are well deserving of this honor."
Kehe, an exercise science major with a 3.90 grade-point average, picks up Academic All-MAC accolades for the third time this year and the fifth time in her career. A three-sport athlete for the Cardinals, Kehe also earned the award for cross country and swimming & diving this school year. Over her career, she has earned the honor twice in cross country (2008 & 2009), twice in outdoor track & field (2009 & 2010) and once in swimming & diving (2010).
During the 2010 outdoor track & field season, Kehe placed 13th in the 3000m steeplechase at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a time of 11:44.57. She also posted a season-fast steeplechase time of 11:36.91 to place fourth at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational hosted by Louisville.
Lorenz, a psychology major with a 3.81 grade-point average, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time this year, after also winning the award during the indoor track & field season. During the outdoor campaign, Lorenz earned second team All-MAC accolades after placing second in the heptathlon at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a career-best score of 5,125, which was the second-best individual score in program history. The score also ranked 39th in the nation.
Among heptathlon participants at the league championship, Lorenz placed first in the 200m dash (25.68), second in the shot put (11.81m), fourth in the long jump (5.47m), fourth in the javelin throw (35.28m), fifth in the 100m hurdles (14.69), fifth in the 800m run (2:23.79) and eighth in the high jump (1.59m). She was also a member of the fifth-place 4x400m relay at the league meet. Lorenz ended the year ranked eighth in the MAC in the javelin (38.51m) and ninth in the long jump (5.83m).
To be nominated for Academic All-MAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season only are considered. A total of 27 athletes were named to the 2010 women's outdoor squad representing 11 of the 12 league schools.
