Vitek Named To Golden Spikes Award Watch List

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior second baseman Kolbrin Vitek (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) has been named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List, USA Baseball announced. The Golden Spikes Award indentifies the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the 33rd annual Golden Spikes Award will be presented Tuesday, July 13, at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Anaheim, Calif.
Vitek, a preseason All-America selection, has been a two-way standout for the Cardinals this season and has led Ball State to first place in the Mid-American Conference with a 13-5 league record. He leads the team with a .393 batting average on the year, which ranks fourth in the league. He also leads the MAC in runs (61), home runs (14) and slugging percentage (.746) while leading the Cardinals in hits (68), RBI (57) and on-base percentage (.478). His 61 runs scored ranked ninth in NCAA Division I while his slugging percentage is 29th in the country.
Vitek, a three-time MAC West Player of the Week, also owns a 2-4 record in 11 weekend starts with a 4.00 ERA. He ranks fifth in the MAC in ERA on the year and has struck out 41 batters in 54.0 innings of work.
Vitek and the Cardinals return to action this weekend as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a three-game MAC series against Western Michigan.
