MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's track & field team opens its 2010 outdoor campaign Saturday, when it travels to Marion, Ind., for the 22nd Annual Polar Bear Invitational, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. The non-scored meet kicks off at 11 a.m. with action in both track and field events.
The Cardinals look to build upon progress made during the indoor season, and improve from their sixth-place finish at last season's Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.
Leading the Cardinals into the outdoor season is junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) who tallied six points at the 2010 MAC Indoor Championships with a third-place showing in the Pentathlon. Her score of 3,771 in the event was an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark.
Fifth-year senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) led BSU's distance runners at the league meet, with seven total points. She place fifth in the 5,000m run (17:31.99) and sixth in the 3,000m run (10:09.44).
Senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) led all Cardinals at the MAC Indoor Championships with eight points, after placing second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.50. Sophomore Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) added one point with an eighth-place time of 8.95.
