March 22, 2010 | Football
Ball State University's football team will begin preparations for the 2010 season with its spring practice. The Cardinals will conclude the spring session Sat., April 17, with its annual Spring Game at Scheumann Stadium.
Ball State's leading returnees include Robert Eddins on defense and MiQuale Lewis on offense.
Eddins, a junior defensive end, ranked sixth for Ball State with 55 total tackles, and led the Cardinals with 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks in 2009. He was credited with three forced fumbles, two blocked kicks and one fumble recovery last season. Eddins tied for 23rd in the nation in tackles for loss, and managed a career high 10 tackles vs. North Texas.
Lewis received news that he has been granted an additional season of eligibility. He was injured in the 2007 season, and the Mid-American Conference and NCAA have given him a fifth year of eligibility as an injury waiver. Lewis, a senior H-Back, gained a career high 301 rushing yards at Eastern Michigan last season. His teammate, Cory Sykes, gained 203 yards in the same game and the duo became the first in NCAA football history (all divisions) to have a 300-yard rusher and a 200-yard rusher in the same game. Lewis ranks third in Ball State history with 3,334 career rushing yards. He started all 12 games and rushed for 871 yards and five touchdowns last season.
Lewis was named to the 2009 All-MAC Second Team after earning first-team honors a year ago. Eddins received All-MAC honors for the first time in his career when he was named to the second team in 2009
The Cardinals will open the 2010 season at Scheumann Stadium with a Thursday night home game vs. Southeast Missouri State Sept. 2.
