Track & Field Hosts BSU Quadrangular Today

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track and field team will host the Ball State Quadrangular Friday at 5 p.m. in the BSU Field Sports Building. BSU's only home meet of the season also features Mid-American Conference opponents Miami, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
In addition to serving as the team's only home meet for the 2010 season, Friday's Ball State Quadrangular is the final tune-up for the program before the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships which will be hosted by Central Michigan Feb. 26-27.
Entering the week, senior Katie Johnson (Evansville, Ind./Harrison H.S.) is the Cardinals' top-ranked performer, as she holds the No. 4 slot in the MAC rankings in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.67. Junior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) also ranks in the top 10 in the 60m hurdles, with her season-best effort of 8.79 ranking ninth in the conference.
Junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) is a threat to score in both the long jump and pentathlon at the MAC Championships, ranking sixth (19-01.50) and seventh (3,614), respectively, in those events entering the week.
In the sprints, sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) ranks 12th in the league in the 200m dash (25.08) and 16th in the 60m dash (7.77). While distance runner senior Vanessa Gilbert (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont H.S.) enters the week in 13th in the 5,000m run (17:52.50) and 19th in the 3,000m run (10:10.96).
BSU has three runners ranked in the top 20 in the league in the 400m dash, led by senior Jenna Schmitmeyer's (Celina, Ohio/Celina H.S.) 12th-place time of 57.33. Sophomore Renyae Owsley (Indianapolis, Ind./Northwest H.S.) is 15th (57.55), while freshman Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) is 17th (57.62).
Rounding out BSU's ranked track performers is sophomore Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central H.S.) who is 13th in the 800m run (2:14.89).
In the throws, senior Tyra Schantz (Bloomfield, Ind./White River Valley H.S.) ranks 12th in the weight throw (52-10.00), while freshman Melissa Dodaro (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg H.S.) is 19th in the shot put (41-03.00).
The BSU Quadrangular will begin at 5 p.m. with the weight throw, pole vault, high jump and long jump. The 4x400m relay is the final event and slated to start at 7:50 p.m.
