Football Loses 33-14 At Kent State
October 30, 2010 | Football
KENT, Ohio - The Ball State University football team (2-7, 1-4 MAC) lost 33-14 to Kent State (4-4, 3-2 MAC) Saturday evening at Dix Stadium.
"They have a good defensive football team," Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says. "We fumbled the ball and had a pass deflect off a players hand that got intercepted. We could not block well and could not get a running game going. You cannot fumble the football, and not control the line of scrimmage. Kent State controlled the line on both sides of the ball. This game is all about blocking and tackling and they beat us in both of those areas."
Kent State took the early 3-0 edge over the Cardinals after scoring a field goal on its first possession of the game.
Ball State answered back after quarterback Keith Wenning ran for 1-yard touchdown to put Ball State up 7-3 with 5:48 left on the clock in the first quarter. The rushing touchdown was Wenning's second of the season.
Kicker Freddy Cortez kicked a 43-yard field goal with 1:11 left in the first quarter making it a 7-6 ball game. The Golden Flashes would then open the second quarter with a touchdown to take back the lead 13-7 at the 10:25 mark.
Ball State's defensive end Andy Puthoff recovered the first fumble of his career in the third quarter to set up another Ball State drive. However, as the Cardinals marched down the field, Wenning threw an interception, which Kent State returned 61-yards for a touchdown -- giving the Golden Flashes a 20-7 cushion over Ball State.
Wenning threw for the 10th touchdown of his career when he connected with wide receiver Otis Brown at the 6:33 mark in the third quarter to bring the Cardinals within six points of the Golden Flashes.
After an Eric Williams fumble on Kent State's 33-yard line, the Golden Flashes were able to capitalize with a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Spencer Keith to wide receiver Tyshon Goode, which increased KSU's lead to 26-14 at the start of the fourth quarter. Kent State would score one more time in the fourth quarter winning the game, 33-14.
