
Women's S&D Takes First In BSU Relay Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team used first-place performances in 10 of 12 events to win Saturday's Ball State Relay Invitational at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The Cardinals posted 228 points in the win, and were followed by Valparaiso (106) and IUPUI (96) in the three-team event.
The Cardinals started the meet in dominating fashion, as junior Alanna Bader (Monroe, Wis./Monroe H.S.), sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) combined for a time of 2:58.62 to win the 300-yard butterfly by almost 11 seconds.
Sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), Hostetler and Bader followed with a first-place time of 3:03.49 in the 300 backstroke relay, as both Hostetler and Bader swam in their second-straight events.
BSU's third-straight win came in the 300 breaststroke relay, as sophomore Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.), freshman Cori Vormohr (Portland, Ind./Jay County H.S.) and senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) posted a time of 3:28.31.
In the first four-woman relay, Kehe, freshman Jillian Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.), freshman Jennifer Miles (Fishers, Ind./North Central H.S.) and Spilman posted a time of 7:57.92 to win the 800 freestyle relay by over 21 seconds.
The fifth event of the afternoon saw IUPUI's Chen Ni take home top honors on the 1-meter diving board with a score of 281.62. BSU's Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central H.S.) followed in second with a score of 261.75.
Ball State got back in the win column in the 500 freestyle relay, with freshman Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.), junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.), Kehe and senior Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) posting a winning effort of 4:50.50.
Saulters, Karwoski, Hostetler and Bylsma took home top billing in the first sprint event, touching the wall for a final time of 1:51.12 in the 200 medley relay.
The Cardinals also scored the top-time in the 200 freestyle relay, with junior Joan Cullen (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West H.S.), Bischoff, Przybylinski and Bylsma clocking out at 1:40.44.
The longest event of the meet, the 1500 freestyle relay, had BSU freshman Morgan Baumgartle (Georgetown, Ind./Floyd Central H.S.), Hostetler and Bischoff dominating the pool, posting a time of 16:20.56 to win by almost 26.5 seconds.
IUPUI's Ni added her second diving win of the afternoon on the 3-meter board with a score of 299.62. Ball State sophomore Christina Riordan (Homewood, Ill./Flossmoor H.S.) followed in second with a score of 254.55.
In the next-to-last event, Ball State's Karwoski, Kehe, Vormohr and Ehresman turned in a time of 4:18.30 to win the 400 medley relay.
The Cardinals ended the meet with Saulters, Bischoff, Cullen and Bylsma winning the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:44.93.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Saturday (Jan. 16), when it travels to Illinois State for a 1 p.m. swim against the Redbirds.
