
Men's Swimming & Diving Picks Up Pair Of Wins

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team picked up victories in eight of 16 events to score a pair of dual wins in a three-team meet hosted by Butler Sunday afternoon at North Central High School. The Cardinals scored 644 points to top Eastern Illinois (571) and Valparaiso (339).
The Cardinals, who improve to 6-4 in dual action, were led by senior Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.) who earned first place in both the 50 freestyle (21.23) and the 100 freestyle (47.80), while placing third in the 100 butterfly (53.70).
Battjes also swam the leadoff leg for the 400 freestyle relay which posted a time of 3:09.51. He was joined by sophomore Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.), freshman Devon Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central H.S.) and senior Austin Laska (Palos Park, Ill./A.A. Stagg H.S.)
Freshman diver Quinton Rodriguez (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) also had a strong meet for the Cardinals, winning both the one-meter (224.85) and three-meter (201.35) events.
Ball State's other event winners were senior Ben Karwoski (Bluffton, Ind./Bluffton H.S.) in the 500 freestyle (4:53.83), junior Mark Golden (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park H.S.) in the 1650 freestyle (16:59.33) and sophomore Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) in the 100 butterfly (51.68).
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action Saturday, Feb. 6 with a 1 p.m. home meet versus Mid-American Conference rival Miami. The contest will be the Cardinals final tune-up before the 2010 MAC Championships which will be hosted by Eastern Michigan March 3-6.
