
Eastern Michigan Tops Women's Swimming & Diving

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Ball State women's swimming & diving team suffered a 155.5-133.5 setback to league rival Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon at EMU's Jones Natatorium.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 6-5 (1-4 Mid-American Conference) on the year. The Eagles climb to 5-4 (3-2 MAC) with the victory.
The Eagles scored wins in the first nine events, before the Cardinals' Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) posted a time of 2:08.49 to tie EMU's Leeza Moser for first in the 200 backstroke. Ball State also picked up wins in the final four events to finish the day with first-place finishes in five of the 16 events.
Hostetler was involved in another close race later in the meet, as junior Alanna Bader (Monroe, Wis./Monroe H.S.) squeaked out a .02 second win over Hostetler in the 100 butterfly. Bader swam the event in 58.16, while Hostetler finished in 58.18.
After posting a second-place effort on the one-meter diving board (258.30), BSU senior Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Linclon Way-Central) added the Cardinals third event victory with a score of 247.43 in the three-meter diving event.
Senior Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) added a win in the 200 IM (2:11.25), while the Cardinals closed the meet with a 400 freestyle relay victory. In the relay, sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.), junior Joan Cullen (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West H.S.), freshman Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) and junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) combined for a time of 1:38.51.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team will have a quick turnaround tomorrow, as the Cardinals travel to North Central High School in Indianapolis for a five-team meet which will be hosted by Butler and also features Eastern Illinois, Youngstown State and Valparaiso. The meet is slated to start at noon.
