TOWSON, Md. - - The Ball State (6-6) women's volleyball team concluded the first day of competition in the Towson Invitational with a 3-0 (32-30, 25-20, 25-13) setback to George Washington (6-4) Friday afternoon at the Towson Center.
In its tournament opener earlier in the day, Ball State saw its four-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 26-24) loss to Penn.
Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) led the Ball State offense with 13 kills, while Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) added 12. Karin Caudill (Selma, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) was BSU's top backcourt player with a match-high 16 digs, while Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) added 13.
Katie Butz paced the George Washington offense with 19 kills, while Alyssa Valentine collected a team-high 11 digs to go along with three total blocks.
Overall, the Colonials held a .256 (46-16-117) to .065 (36-28-123) attacking advantage in the match, while out-digging Ball State 55 to 51. GW also had a slim 7.5 to seven advantage in total blocks.
George Washington posted the first five points of the opening set and cruised to an eight-point lead at 12-4. Back-to-back aces from Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) would get the Cardinals within five at 20-15, while a Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville H.S.) kill forced the Colonials to call timeout with a 21-17 lead.
GW exited the break with three of the next four points to reach set point at 24-18. This time it was the Cardinals turn to make a run, as three-straight kills - - one from Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and two from Breivogel - - sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Cardinals set point at 25-24.
Ball State was not able to capitalize on the opportunity, however, as a pair of kills from Butz gave the Colonials their second set point at 26-25. BSU has one more chance to complete the comeback, after a Green kill and a Brandl solo block pushed the score to 28-27. But once again, a pair of GW kills stopped the run.
With the score deadlocked at 30 after a Boyd kill, a pair of Ball State attack errors handed the Colonials the set at 32-30. In all, the teams combined for 56 digs in the opening frame, with the Cardinals notching 27.
After the teams played to a 5-5 tie in set two, it was the Colonials who would make the first charge, posting four of the next five points to pull ahead 9-6. However, a pair of Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) kills and a Breivogel smash tied the score back at nine.
With the score still tied at 12, a kill from GW's Lauren Whyte and a pair of solo blocks forced the Cardinals to use a timeout trailing 15-12. The Colonials extended their lead to five points at 20-15 after two more BSU attack errors. George Washington went on to win the set 25-20 on an Alex Coward service ace.
The Colonials got off to another quick start in the third game, scoring six of the first seven points, forcing BSU to use an early timeout trailing 6-1. GW tacked on the first two points after the break and went on to win the set 25-13.
The Ball State women's volleyball team concludes play in the Towson Invitational Saturday, with a 10 a.m. match versus the host Tigers.
