► VOLLEYBALL SET TO HOST ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE: The Ball State women's volleyball team will open the home portion of the 2009 season Friday, when it hosts IPFW in the 7:30 p.m. match of the Active Ankle Challenge . . . The two-day event also features SIU-Edwardsville and Louisville.
► ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE LIVE: The radio home of Ball State women's volleyball, WCRD 91.3 FM, will carry all six matches of the 2009 Active Ankle Challenge . . . Fans not in the Muncie area can also listen for free online.
► PROMOTION TIME: Ball State Athletics is running several promotions in conjunction with this weekend's Active Ankle Challenge:
- - Fans who bring their ticket stub from the Ball State vs. North Texas football game will get in free to every match of the Active Ankle Challenge.
- - Friday, Sept. 4 vs. IPFW at 7:30 p.m.:
a. FRESHMAN NIGHT - All Ball State freshman that enter through Gate 3 with their 2009 Game On t-shirt will receive one voucher good for a hotdog or medium drink.

► SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: The Ball State women's volleyball team posted an 0-3 record in last weekend's Mortar Board Premier Tournament hosted by Purdue . . . The Cardinals were swept by both No. 19 Purdue (19-25, 18-25, 17-25) and Dayton (17-25, 16-25, 14-25) . . . In the tournament finale, the Cardinals suffered a 1-3 (25-20, 25-27, 21-25, 20-25) setback to Coastal Carolina . . . Senior Julie Breivogel was BSU's top attacker during the two-day event, racking up 27 kills - including 22 versus Coastal Carolina - for a 3.38 kills-per-set average . . . Christie Waters was BSU's top defender, logging a 3.60 digs-per-set average, while adding a career-best 21 digs versus Coastal Carolina . . . As a team, BSU hit .130, while averaging 11.00 kills, 12.60 digs and 1.50 blocks per set . . . The Cardinals' opponents hit .268, while averaging 13.60 kills, 11.30 digs and 2.20 blocks per set.
► SCOUTING IPFW: The Mastodons enter the week with a 2-2 overall record . . . In last weekend's IPFW Invitational, the Mastodons scored wins over Butler and Kent State, surrounded by losses to Eastern Illinois and Drake . . . Rebekah Roehm was IPFW's top attacker, racking up 50 kills for a 3.57 kills-per-set average . . . Jamie Schwartz led the Mastodons' backcourt with a 3.79 digs-per-set average . . . As a team, IPFW hit .162, while averaging 12.21 kills, 16.57 digs and 2.32 blocks per set . . . The Mastodons' opponents hit .149, while averaging 11.07 kills, 17.86 digs and 2.32 blocks per set . . . IPFW hosts Eastern Michigan Tuesday night.
► SCOUTING SIU-EDWARDSVILLE: The Cougars enter the week with an 0-4 overall record . . . In last weekend's Indiana State Tournament, SIU-Edwardsville suffered losses to UMKC, Akron, North Dakota and Indiana State . . . Sydney Winslow was the Cougars top attacker, smashing 40 kills for a 2.50 kills-per-set average . . . Tiffany Turner was the leader of three defenders with 20-plus digs, averaging 1.75 digs-per-set . . . As a team, SIU-Edwardsville hit .136, while averaging 9.88 kills, 10.44 digs and 0.62 blocks per set . . . The Cougars' opponents hit .291, while averaging 13.00 kills, 13.06 digs and 1.94 blocks per set . . . SIU-Edwardsville plays at Western Illinois Tuesday night.
► SCOUTING LOUISVILLE: The Cardinals enter the Active Ankle Challenge with an 1-2 overall record . . . In last weekend's Sheraton Riverside/Puccini's Cardinal Classic, Louisville suffered losses to Arizona and Wichita State, while topping Belmont . . . Lola Arslanbekova was Louisville's top attacker, racking up 40 kills for a 3.64 kills-per-set average . . . Lindsey Mango led the Cardinals' backcourt with a 3.73 digs-per-set average . . . As a team, Louisville hit .220, while averaging 12.55 kills, 11.82 digs and 2.50 blocks per set . . . The Cardinals' opponents hit .223, while averaging 12.18 kills, 10.82 digs and 1.82 blocks per set.
► SERIES VERSUS THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: Ball State is 7-3 all-time versus IPFW, with the team's splitting the last four matches . . . Last season, BSU scored a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 26-24) homecourt win over the Mastodons (Oct. 21) . . . Overall, the home team has won the last five meetings in the series . . . Louisville owns an 8-6 edge in the all-time series, despite BSU pulling off a 3-2 (23-30, 29-31, 30-21, 30-26, 18-16) come-from-behind victory over a 17th-ranked Louisville squad to end the 2003 season (Nov. 29) . . . One season earlier, Louisville topped the Cardinals 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-25) in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament (Dec. 6) . . . BSU and SIU-Edwardsville will be playing each other for the first time in women's volleyball.
► MCGINNIS GOES ALL-TOURNAMENT: Sophomore setter Brittany McGinnis earned Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament accolades after turning in one of the top performances of the event . . . McGinnis, who earned MAC All-Freshman honors as a setter last season, posted her first career kill/dig double-double after being moved to the outside attacker position for the Coastal Carolina match to help overcome the loss of a pair of injured players . . . McGinnis went on to record a career-high 11 kills on 33 attempts versus the Chanticleers, while adding 16 digs . . . Prior to that, McGinnis was 7-of-8 from the attack line at her setter position, giving her a team-best .310 (19-6-42) attack percentage for the week.
► WATERS IN THE FIRE: Sophomore defensive specialist Christie Waters found herself thrust into the starting libero role last weekend, and went on to turn in a career-high 21 digs versus Coastal Carolina . . . She entered the Purdue match in relief of the injured junior Alyssa Rio in the second set and finished the contest with eight digs . . . She also scored seven digs versus Dayton . . . Waters finished the week with a team-best 3.60 digs-per-set average, which ranks ninth in the league entering the week.
► FELTON CAPITALIZES VERSUS COASTAL: In her first action with the Cardinals, redshirt freshman Andrea Felton posted her first career double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs in last Saturday's match versus Coastal Carolina . . . Making her first career start as well, Felton led the Cardinals to a season-best .190 attack percentage versus the Chanticleers.
► BREIVOGEL BREAKS 1,000: With five kills in last Saturday's morning match versus Dayton, senior outside attacker Julie Breivogel became just the 10th player in program history to record 1,000 career kills . . . The moment came on her last kill of the contest, which occurred with BSU trailing 15-19 in the second set . . . Breivogel went on to add a season-high 22 kills versus Coastal Carolina to move her career total to 1,022 . . . Breivogel needs 114 more kills to pass Mindy Stanley's (1993-96) career total of 1,135 kills for ninth on BSU's all-time list.
► KAKATOLIS CLIMBING THE BLOCKING CHARTS: Senior opposite side attacker Elaina Kakatolis collected three block assists last weekend to move her career total to 192 . . . She is nine block assists shy of breaking into the top 20 in BSU annals . . . Her 212 career total blocks are also 22 shy of breaking into the top 20 in program history . . . In addition, her 678 career kills leave her 93 markers away from the top 20 in BSU history.
►OVER THE AIR WAVES: The Ball State women's volleyball team has the most comprehensive radio package in the Mid-American Conference, as WCRD 91.3 FM will once again be the radio home of the Cardinals for the 2009 season . . . The station is slated to cover all 11 of the Cardinals home matches this season, as well as select road contests and all of BSU's 2009 MAC Tournament action . . . The state-of-the art WCRD studio will be the home of "Serving It Up" with Dave Boos, a weekly volleyball report which airs Monday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. beginning Aug. 31.
►ON THE TUBE: The Ball State Sports Network will televise a pair of BSU matches (Oct. 24 versus Miami and Nov. 12 versus Toledo), while Ball State Sports Link is slated to webcast at least one match.
