MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team was one of a record 409 teams to earn the 2008-09 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, as announced by the ACVA.
“The staff is very proud of our team's focus in becoming balanced student-athletes,” said BSU head coach Dave Boos. “This award is an incredible accomplishment considering we added ten new members to our team this past year. This is a special group of student-athletes that Ball State can be very proud of.”
The Ball State women's volleyball team finished the 2008-09 academic year with a combined 3.317 grade-point average, with 11 of its student-athletes posting a 3.0 GPA or better. During the 2008 fall semester, the team posted a 3.297 GPA. In the 2009 spring semester, the squad tallied a 3.337 GPA.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Ball State was one of 71 Division I women's volleyball programs to earn the honor, as well as one of seven Mid-American Conference institutions to pick up the award. The 409 total teams recognized broke the previous record of 354 set last season.
