MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State junior Ali Bishel (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) has been named to the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bishel, a landscape architecture major with a 3.67 grade-point average, is the first Ball State track & field student athlete to earn praise on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad since the 2006-07 season when Rose Lehe earned Academic All-District V Second Team accolades.
A five-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection over her career, Bishel was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer and First Team All-MAC after capturing titles in the 3,000m (9:43.23) and 5,000m (16:39.80) races at the 2009 MAC Indoor Championships. Her time in the 5000m was an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark, while both clockings were the fastest in the MAC this season. Bishel also placed ninth in the mile (4:58.64) at the league's indoor championship meet.
During the 2009 outdoor campaign, Bishel picked up Second Team All-MAC accolades after taking second in the 10,000m run (35:59.11) at the MAC Championships. She also ran to a fourth-place showing in the 5,000m run (17:21.55) at the league meet. Bishel posted the fourth-fastest 10,000m time in program history with a 35:51.83 at the “GINA” Relays, while also turning in BSU's best times of the season in the 1,500m (4:38.10) and 5,000m (17:18.15).
Bishel, who redshirted for the 2008 cross country season, has captured four MAC Indoor Championship individual titles over her career, while finishing second at the 2007 MAC Cross Country Championship. She has participated in the NCAA Championships twice, placing 16th in the 5,000m run in 2008 and 52nd in cross country in 2007. She also owns the school record for the indoor 5,000m run at 16:21.66.
The 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Women's Track & Field/Cross Country teams were voted on by members of CoSIDA from District V, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To qualify for Academic All-District, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status at their university, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 and be either a starter or key reserve for their team.
Members of the Academic All-District first team will have their names places on the ballot for Academic All-America honors, while student-athletes on the Academic All-District second and third teams (if applicable) do not advance to the national ballot.
