Vitek Named MAC West Pitcher Of The Week
March 23, 2009 | Baseball
“Kolbrin had two great starts for us this week and is really showing signs of gaining strength on the mound,” head coach Greg Beals said. “Being a two-way play, it is a challenge maintaining his arm strength so we started the season slow with him. His success is a tribute to his skills and abilities as a baseball player.”
Vitek picked up the victory over Akron Sunday as he worked six innings and did not allow an earned run. He held the Zips to five hits and struck out eight batters in his first MAC start of the season. He also threw five innings at Notre Dame Tuesday as he allowed one earned run and struck out seven batters. On the season, he owns 3.63 ERA and a 2-1 record as he has struck out 26 batters while only walking four.
Vitek joins junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani), junior right-hander Brad Piatt (Galveston, Ind./Lewis Cass), junior left fielder Kory Benbow (Muncie, Ind./Cowan) and freshman first baseman Ian Nielsen (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) as MAC West weekly award winners this season. The Cardinals will head to Terre Haute, Ind., for a midweek contest with Indiana State Wednesday afternoon.
