MUNCIE, Ind. - - For the second time in the last three weeks, Ball State fifth-year senior Amber Williams (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office Feb. 25.
The honor marks the fourth time Williams has garnered MAC Track Athlete of the Week accolades in her career, and the second time this season after she first picked up the award Feb. 11.
“I am proud of and excited for Amber who has earned this honor twice in the last three weeks,” said BSU head coach Randy Heisler. “It is a great honor for our program and for Ball State Athletics to be represented by such a great student-athlete at both the MAC and NCAA levels.”
In last Friday's Ball State Quadrangular (Feb. 20), which also featured MAC opponents Miami, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, Williams continued to shine in the 60-meter hurdles turning in her fastest time of the season at 8.29. The effort not only won the event, but was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
“As a previous NCAA qualifier, Amber has been through this before and directed her training to getting faster and faster each week,” added Heisler. “I look for her to improve upon her time this weekend at the MAC Championships and again when she competes at the NCAA Championships.”
Williams followed the performance with another first-place effort, this time in the 60-meter dash, clocking in with her second season-best time on the day at 7.45. The effort was .01 of a second shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the event.
Williams concluded the meet with a second-place run of 25.22 in the 200 meter dash.
Entering this weekend's 2009 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Kent State, Williams ranks first in the league in the 60-meter dash (7.45), 60-meter hurdles (8.29) and 200-meter dash (24.56).
