
Men's Swimming & Diving Tallies Three Wins At IUPUI Natatorium

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Led by two swimmers with a pair of wins each, the Ball State men's swimming & diving team picked up victories over IUPUI (102-29), Saint Louis (81-50) and Western Illinois (106-26) in a quadrangular meet Saturday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
With the three wins, the Cardinals up their dual meet record to 4-1 (0-1 Mid-American Conference) on the young season.
Overall, Ball State posted wins in 10 of the 16 scored events at the meet, with both senior Ben Karwoski (Bluffton, Ind./Bluffton H.S.) and sophomore Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) scoring a pair of wins each.
Karwoski took top billing in both the 200 freestyle (1:47.57) and the 500 freestyle (4:50.65). Krupa swept the butterfly events for the second-straight day, posting a time of 52.20 in the 100 and 1:57.96 on the 200.
The Cardinals started the meet with senior Ryan Misener (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.), sophomore Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.), Krupa and senior Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.) winning the 200 medley relay by almost a second-and-a-half with a time of 1:36.98.
Two events later, Karwoski posted his first individual event win of the day in the 200 freestyle. Following two more events, Krupa earned his first win of the day in the 200 butterfly. Ball State would go on to win the next three events to take control of the meet.
Battjes and fellow senior Austin Laska (Palos Park, Ill./A.A. Stagg H.S.) provided the best finish of the afternoon, with only one-hundredth of a second separating the two in the 50 freestyle. Battjes won the race in 21.54, while Laksa finished second in 21.55.
Freshmen Quinton Rodriguez (Rockford, Mich./Rockford H.S.) and Devon Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central H.S.) provided the other two wins in the run, scoring first in 1-meter diving (266.45) and the 100 freestyle (47.81), respectively.
Rounding out BSU's individual winners was McNeeley, who won the 200 breaststroke (2:14.62).
The Cardinals ended the meet with Battjes, sophomore Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.), Hill and Laska winning the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:13.49.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action Dec. 12, when it hosts Michigan State in a 2 p.m. showdown at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
