November 01, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
DEKALB, Ill. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team snapped its five match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-22, 29-27, 25-19) sweep of Northern Illinois Saturday evening at Victor E. Court.
With the win, the Cardinals sweep the season series with the Huskies and improve to 11-14 (4-8 Mid-American Conference) on the year. The Huskies fall to 13-12 (7-5 MAC) with the loss.
In the victory, senior Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) paced all players with a match-best 18 kills, while hitting for a .378 (18-4-37) rate of success. Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) and Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) each smashed eight kills in the win.
Overall, the Ball State offense exploded for .265 (48-17-117) rate of success on the night, while limiting the Huskies to a .174 (40-21-109) hitting mark. Ball State also held a 10 to two advantage in total blocks.
Defensively, Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) paced all players with 15 digs, while Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) added nine.
Allison McGlaughlin led the Huskies offense with 12 kills, while Meagan Schoenrock added 11. McGlaughlin also added a team-high 14 digs for the Northern Illinois.
The teams traded 3-1 runs to open the match before playing to a 14-14 deadlock, including alternating kills for 11 straight plays. A Boyd marker would end the back-and-forth battle, while an Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) smash gave BSU a 16-14 edge and forced an NIU timeout.
With the score at 19-18, a Brandl kill and a NIU attack error gave the Cardinals a three point edge at 21-18. The Huskies responded with kills from McGlaughlin and Meghan Romo to force a BSU timeout at 21-20.
Two consecutive Ball State blocks after the break, both including Boyd, allowed the guests to reclaim the three-point lead at 23-20 and led to NIU's second timeout. The Huskies scored the next two points, but kills from BSU's Breivogel and Kakatolis ended the set at 25-22.
Kills from Sullivan and Boyd helped the Cardinals rally off four of the first five points to open the second set. However, the hosts battled back with eight of the next 10 points, including a pair of kills from Cassie Yates, to pull ahead 8-6. Two NIU errors allowed the Cardinals, and from there the combatants battled to a second straight 14-14 tie.
This time a solo block and kill from Romo helped the Huskies break the stalemate. However, three kills and a block assist from Breivogel helped BSU answer back and take an 18-17 advantage. Moments later, a block assists from Sullivan and Brandl pushed the BSU lead to 22-19. After NIU's second timeout, two BSU errors and a McGlaughlin kill tied the frame at 22.
With the score tied at 23, another kill from McLaughlin gave the hosts the first set point. However a kill from Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) kept the Cardinals alive, and from there, the teams battled to a 27-27 score. Breivogel's seventh kill of the frame gave BSU its second set point, while a NIU attack error gave Ball State a 29-27 set victory and a 2-0 edge in the match.
Despite an early error, a kill from Kakatolis and a pair of BSU blocks led to a 3-1 advantage and an early Huskies break. NIU would battle back and tie the frame at four, before back-to-back Brandl smashes started a 5-1 BSU run and moved the score to 9-5.
Northern Illinois answered back with a 4-1 run to draw within one at 10-9. Two NIU errors later, the BSU lead was back to three at 12-9. The host Huskies would get no closer than two points the rest of the frame, as back-to-back Breivogel tallies led to NIU's second timeout at 18-14.
Two more Breivogel kills and a Boyd marker helped the Cardinals extend their advantage to six at 21-15. NIU cut the lead in half with the next three points, but a Kakatolis kill stopped the run as BSU scored four of the final five points to win the set 25-19 on a Brandl kill.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action next Friday, when Eastern Michigan invades Worthen Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve. BSU will also host Central Michigan next Sunday (Nov. 8) for a 1 p.m. start.
