October 08, 2009 | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - - Behind a balanced offensive attack that saw four players record double-digit kills, the Ball State women's volleyball team scored a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 15-9) victory over Toledo Thursday evening at Savage Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals climb back to .500 overall with a 9-9 mark, while improving to 2-3 in Mid-American Conference action. Toledo drops to 10-7 (1-4 MAC) with the setback.
"We started off the night being carried by a few players, but as the match progressed, more and more players jumped on board," said head coach Dave Boos. "We had great performances from Hannah and Jennifer that sparked us to victory."
In the victory, Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) and Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) tied for match-high honors with 14 kills. For Brandl, the 14 kills were a career-high and complimented a three-ace and three block effort. Green added a career-high five solo blocks to her stat line.
In her second start of the season, Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) posted a season-high 13 kills, while Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) added a season-best 11 markers.
"I think there was a lack of confidence hangover from last weekend," added Boos. "We were able to work through that and put together a great team effort to finish off a good Toledo team."
In the Ball State backcourt, Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) and Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) tied for match-high honors with 17 digs.
The Cardinals finished the contest with a .219 (57-25-146) to .127 (48-28-158) attacking advantage, while out-digging the Rockets 71 to 59. BSU also held a 10 to six lead in total blocks.
Amber DeWeerdt paced the Toledo attack with 14 kills, while Sarah Wilson and Sondra Parys added 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Katie Westerfeld led the UT backcourt with 16 digs.
The teams played to a 6-6 tie in the opening set before a Parys kill sparked a 3-0 run to give the Rockets a 9-6 lead. Ball State responded with kills from Sullivan and Brandl to battle back within one at 9-8.
Toledo followed with eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead 17-10. The Cardinals were able to draw within three points on two occasions, 18-15 and 19-16, but could not get any closer as the Rockets completed a 25-20 first-set win on a kill from Wilson.
The Rockets carried over the momentum into the second set, starting with an ace and building a 7-2 advantage to force a Ball State timeout. UT extended its lead to seven with two straight points out of the break, but a Green kill and three Toledo attack errors cut the gap to 9-6.
Trailing 14-12, BSU would capitalize on two more Toledo miscues to tie the set at 14. Moments later a Sullivan kill gave Ball State its first lead of the set at 18-17. The Cardinals were able to take their first two-point edge of the night at 21-19 after a service error and Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) solo block.
Toledo fought back to tie the set at 21 thanks to a Stephanie Kersting kill and a BSU error. However, the Cardinals were able to even the match at a set apiece as a kill and ace from Brandl helped the guests rattle off the final four points to win the frame 25-21.
Aces from Sullivan and Brandl helped Ball State play to a 4-1 advantage early in the third frame, as this time it was Toledo calling the early timeout trailing 9-4. BSU turned up the heat from there, as kills from four different players led to UT's second timeout at the 15-6 mark.
The Cardinals reached set point at 24-16 after back-to-back kills from Sullivan, before winning the set 25-17 on a UT service error.
Toledo gained control of the fourth set early, as Parys opened the frame with back-to-back kills leading to a BSU timeout at the 5-1 mark. UT extended the lead to 7-1 with the next two points, only to be forced to use their first break of the set as a Green kill and a pair of McGinnis aces helped make the score 7-6.
Boyd's second kill of the rally tied the set at seven, and from there, the teams played 9-9 stalemate. The tie did not last long, however, as UT regained a five-point advantage at 15-10 with a 6-1 run.
Ball State answered with a 9-4 run, tying the set at 19, but they could not push through as Toledo scored six of the final eight points to win the set 25-21 on a BSU service error.
Ball State jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set, as a Brandl kill and block assists helped force a 3-0 timeout from the Rockets. A kill and an ace from Sullivan helped extend the BSU advantage to 8-2 at the court switch.
The Cardinals kept the hot hand going, forcing Toledo to use their final timeout of the night trailing 10-3. Ball State added two more points before a kill from DeWeerdt and back-to-back attack errors made BSU call timeout with a 12-6 advantage.
Two more BSU errors later, the Cardinals used their final timeout at the 12-8 mark. After the break, Toledo made errors on two of the next three plays to give Ball Sate set point at 14-9. Then, on her first and only swing of the day, Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) came off the bench to provide the match-winning kill at 15-9.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday night, when Buffalo visits Worthen Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve.
