Women?s Volleyball Winning Streak Snapped At Kent State

KENT, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team saw its two-match Mid-American Conference winning streak come to an end Friday night with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) loss to Kent State at the M.A.C. Center.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 10-10 (3-4 MAC). The Golden Flashes improve to 11-10 (4-3 MAC) with the victory.
Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) and Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) tied for team-high honors with seven kills apiece, while Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) added a match-high 15 digs.
Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) also had a solid attacking night for the Cardinals, scoring six kills on seven swings from her setting position.
Overall, the Golden Flashes limited the Ball State attack to a .154 (32-18-91) rate of success, while KSU hit for a .359 (45-12-92) mark.
Kent State's Arjola Prenga paced all players with a match-high 14 kills, while added a team-best 11 digs.
After a lighting fast start helped the Golden Flashes build an 8-4 advantage, a two Ball State blocks and a McGinnis kill got the Cardinals within one at 9-8. An Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) solo block on the next rally tied the score at nine, while McGinnis' second kill of the frame push the score to 10-10. However, KSU rattled off the next five points to pull ahead 15-10.
Ball State remained within four at 19-15, but the hosts posted the next five points to reach set point at 24-15. To errors from KSU kept the Cardinals alive momentarily, but a solo block from KSU setter Jenny Keck ended the frame at 25-17.
A Breivogel kill to open the second set gave the Cardinals their first lead of the night at 1-0. From there, the teams battled to a 19-19 deadlock. Kent State broke the tie with kills from Liva Brivule and Prenga to force BSU to use its first timeout trailing 21-19.
The Golden Flashes' Lauren Jones added back-to-back kill after the break, pushing the score to 23-19. Following Ball State's final timeout, an attack error and a Meredith Paskert kill gave the hosts a 25-19 second-frame victory.
A KSU service error and kill from Brandl gave Ball State an early 2-0 edge in set three. Unfortunately, the hosts rallied off eight of the next 10 points to build an 8-4 advantage. A McGinnis ace pulled the Cardinals within two at 8-6, but KSU answered back, forcing the Cardinals to call timeout trailing 14-8.
Kent State added the first two points after the break and went on to win the set 25-16 on a kill from Prenga.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday, when it travels to Athens, Ohio, to battle the MAC East Division leading Ohio Bobcats. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
