Football Loses 24-19 at Temple
October 10, 2009 | Football
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - The Ball State University football team lost 24-19 at Temple in a Mid-American Conference battle Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.
"We tip our hats to Coach Al Golden and the Temple staff," Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says. "They have done a great job of rebuilding this program. Temple is big and physical and they deserved to win this football game. They put a lot of pressure on our offense and tightened their coverage. They were the better team."
After falling behind 10-0 at the half against Temple, Ball State scored two touchdowns in just over two minutes to claim a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter.
The Cardinals scored with 10:59 to go in the third quarter after quarterback Kelly Page's 50-yard completion to wide receiver Torieal Gibson. The pass play was a career long pass for Page and a career long reception for Gibson and marked Gibson's third touchdown reception of the season. After holding the Owls defensively, Temple snapped the ball over the punter's head and Eric Williams recovered the ball in the endzone and the Cardinals led 13-10. The TD marked the first score of Williams' career.
Temple quickly regained the lead after running back Bernard Pierce rushed for two yards to take a 17-13 advantage over Ball State at the 4:48 mark in the third quarter.
It was a defensive battle in the fourth quarter until Temple scored a touchdown after Pierce rushed for three yards with 3:29 left in the game.
The Cardinals ended the game with a two-yard touchdown pass from Page to wide receiver Daniel Ifft.
"Football is a simple game," Parrish says. "We turned the ball over five times, missed an extra point and had some really bad kickoffs. We are not good enough to overcome those types of mistakes."
The Cardinals (0-6; MAC 0-2) will return to action Saturday with a Family Weekend home game vs. Bowling Green at noon at Scheumann Stadium.
