January 29, 2009 | Gymnastics
The Ball State gymnastics team will host the Central Michgan Chippewas in a Mid-American Conference meet Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cardinals, under the direction of second-year head coach Nadalie Walsh, will compete in Worthen Arena this season due to the renovation of Irving Gym.
Ball State enters the meet with a 1-2 overall record and 0-2 MAC mark, while the Chippewas are 3-0 overall and 1-0 against league competition.
Fifth-year senior Teresa Phipps has led the Cardinals thus far this season. She posted first-place finishes on the balance beam and in the all-around in the season opener at Penn, while winning the beam at Bowling Green and tying for first on the bars at Kent State last weekend. Her 9.850 on the beam last weekend ties for the 11th best mark in Ball State history. Phipps has a season best 39.225 in the all-around, which she accomplished at Kent State last weekend. Her mark ranks as the fifth best score in Ball State annals.
Freshman Nichole Sleeper has the team's top score on the vault this season with a 9.875 at Penn. That mark ties for the fourth best individual score in school history. Sleeper was named the MAC's Specialist of the Week for her performance in the Cardinals win at Penn.
Ball State's Sunday meet vs. Central Michigan is the third of five straight conference competitions. The Cardinals will host Northern Illinois Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
