
Women's Volleyball Suffers Loss to Purdue

MUNCIE, Ind. - - In front of the fifth-largest crowd to attend a women's volleyball match in Worthen Arena history, the Ball State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) setback to No. 18 Purdue in the final match of the 2008 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge.
With the win, the 18th-ranked Boilermakers captured the tournament title, going undefeated in two-day event. Purdue's Kelli Miller was named the Active Ankle Challenge Most Valuable Player, after guiding the Boilermakers to a 3-0 record in the event.
Joining Miller on the All-Tournament Team were: Stephanie Lynch (Purdue), Danita Merlau (Purdue), Jennifer Berwanger (Southern Illinois), Brooklyn Robbins (Southern Illinois), Katie Kenline (Tennessee Tech) and Julie Breivogel (Ball State).
In the final match of the tournament, the Purdue defense limited the Cardinals to a .043 attack percentage, while its offense connected for a .280 rate of success. Merlau led all players in the contest with 10 kills, while adding four blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.
The Cardinals were paced offensively by Julie Breivogel's (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) nine kills versus Purdue. Breivogel led all players in the tournament with 41 kills over the three matches, including a tournament-high 22 kills versus Tennessee Tech.
On the defensive side, BSU's backcourt was paced by Alyssa Rio's (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) nine digs, while tournament MVP Miller added a match-high 16 digs for the Boilermakers.
In the first match of the tournament night-cap, Southern Illinois scored a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Tennessee Tech to take home second-place honors in the Active Ankle Challenge. Jennifer Berwanger led the offensive charge for SIU with 11 kills, while Amanda Lindgren smashed a match-best 12 kills for TTU.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will have a quick turnaround this week, as it will face IUPUI Tuesday in a 7 p.m. match which will be televised on the Ball State Sports Network. Prior to the match, Sports Link will broadcast a pre-game show starting at 6 p.m. live from Worthen Arena. Both the pre-game show and the match will be webcasted on www.ballstatesports.com.

MORNING SESSION RECAP
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite a strong comeback effort, the Ball State women's volleyball team opened day two of the 2008 Active Ankle Challenge with a 3-2 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) setback to Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
After being limited to a .138 rate of success in losing the first two sets, the BSU (2-4) offense came to life in the final three frames, exploding for a .437 mark. Utilizing its hot hitting, the Cardinals managed to get within two points of winning the match at 13-12 off a kill from junior Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.), unfortunately, TTU rallied off the final three points to win the match.
Green finished the contest with 17 kills, which is a BSU season-high for the transfer from Tampa, while junior Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) smashed a match-high 22 markers on her way to a .435 attack percentage. Breivogel also added 12 digs for her third career double-double.
Defensively, freshman Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) collected a career-high 19 digs for the Cardinals, while sophomore Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S) paced BSU with 20.
Four Golden Eagles tallied double-figure kills in the victory, paced by Amanda Lingren's 16. Lingren added 10 digs for a double-double, while Burris Laboratory School graduate Kappy Lang also collected a double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs.
Katie Kenline was TTU's top defender with a match-high 24 digs.
In the opening match of the day, No. 18 Purdue (5-0) scored a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-11) victory over Southern Illinois (4-1) Saturday morning at Worthen Arena.
In the match, Purdue's Stephanie Lynch and Danita Merlau each recorded 11 kills, while guiding the Boilermakers to a .316 overall attack percentage. Southern Illinois' was paced offensively by Jennifer Berwanger with 10 kills. As a team, the Salukis hit .076.
Play in the 2008 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge will conclude later this evening, when Southern Illinois battles Tennessee Tech at 5 p.m. and Ball State plays No. 18 Purdue at 7:30 p.m.
