Barnhart, Johnson Compete At Mideast Regional

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's track and field team will have two participants competing in the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, Friday-Saturday, May 30-31, at John McDonnell Field held in Fayetteville, Ark.

Amanda Barnhart was a First Team All-MAC selection after winning the long jump event at the Mid-American Conference Championships with a distance of 20-2 ?. She set a regional qualifying mark earlier in the year at the Stan Lyons Invitational with a leap of 19-9 ?.

Katie Johnson was also a First Team All-MAC selection when she took first place in the 100-meter hurdles at the MAC Championships. Johnson recorded her fastest time of the season at the MAC Championships clocking in at 13.69. She first regional qualifying time came at the Stan Lyons Invitational when she finished in 13.86.

Ball State falls in the Mideast Region which also includes schools such as LSU, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and meet host Arkansas.

Field events will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with running events starting at 3 p.m. On Saturday, field events will begin at 11 a.m. with running events following at 5 p.m.

While Arkansas hosts the Mideast Championships, Florida State is hosting the East Championships, Nebraska the Midwest Championships and Cal State Northridge the West Championships.

A top five finish in any individual event and a top three finish in a relay automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships, in Des Moines, Iowa next month. To be considered for an at-large bid and individual athlete must finish sixth through 12th and relays must finish fourth through eighth.
