April 14, 2008 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State sophomore outfielder Kory Benbow has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.
Over four games last week, Benbow led the Cardinals with a .588 batting average (10-for-17), two home runs and 10 RBI. Benbow also collected two doubles on his way to a 1.059 slugging percentage for the week, while drawing four walks en route to a .652 on-base percentage.
Benbow notched a career-high seven RBI -- including a grand slam -- in Ball State's win Tuesday at IPFW. The sophomore then continued his hot hitting over the weekend, going 8-for-11 at the plate in three conference games against Bowling Green. In game two of the weekend series on Saturday, he was a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run and a pair of doubles.
Benbow hit safely in all four games last week and scored a team-best 11 runs. He also stole two bases to bring his season total to five.
With his recent success, Benbow has raised his season batting average to .363. The outfielder owns five home runs, nine doubles and 25 RBI on the season. His 36 runs scored rank second on the team.
Benbow's award is the fifth individual honor for the Cardinals this season. Catcher Zach Dygert (March 19), outfielder Ryan Chenoweth (March 31) and shortstop Dean Anna (April 7) have all earned the Player of the Week award once, while right-hander Kolbrin Vitek was named Pitcher of the Week on March 19.
Ball State enters this week atop the MAC West standings with a record of 19-11 (7-2 MAC). The Cardinals host Indiana State Tuesday at Ball Diamond before traveling to Indiana on Wednesday. Ball State returns to MAC play Friday with the first game of a three-game series at Central Michigan.
