
Coastal Carolina Scores Late To Hand Baseball 10-8 Loss

CONWAY, S.C. -- The Ball State baseball team battled all day Sunday against 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina, but the Cardinals came up on the short end of a 10-8 decision in the final game of the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament.
Ball State (5-6) cranked out 13 hits in the game, seven of which went for extra bases. Shortstop Dean Anna led the Cardinals with three hits in the game. Left fielder Justin Rogers, first baseman Matt Stoeklen and right fielder Ryan Chenoweth each logged two hits.
Ball State fell behind 8-4 through the first four innings but chipped away over the next three frames to tie the game.
The Cardinals picked up two runs in the fifth inning when second baseman Jeremy Hazelbaker followed a Stoeklen double with a home run to center field. In the sixth, Anna led of with a double and later scored on an RBI single from Rogers to draw Ball State within one run. The Cardinals then plated the game-tying run in the seventh inning when pinch hitter Nate Fields led off with a double and later scored on an Anna single.
The tie, however, was short-lived.
Coastal Carolina (12-1), which had been scoreless since the fourth inning, pushed two runs across in the eighth on a two-RBI double from catcher Dock Doyle to go back on top 10-8.
The Chanticleers' Pete Andrelczyk then sent Ball State down in order in the ninth inning to seal the win for Coastal Carolina. Andrelczyk earned the win after throwing a perfect final 2.1 innings.
Coastal Carolina center fielder David Sappelt led all players with four hits. He belted a two-run homer to start the scoring for the Chanticleers in a four-run first inning. Coastal Carolina added a run apiece in the second and third innings and picked up two more in the fourth on a two-run homer from Doyle.
Ball State managed a run in the first inning on an RBI double from Stoeklen. The Cardinals then picked up two runs in the third on an RBI double from Rogers and an RBI single from designated hitter Kolbrin Vitek. Ball State also added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Anna.
Anna, Rogers and Hazelbaker all logged two RBI in the game. Doyle led all players with four RBI.
Ball State returns to action with a pair of midweek contests Tuesday and Wednesday at Charleston Southern. The Cardinals then return to Coastal Carolina next weekend to take part in the Centex Home Invitational, starting Friday.
