March 31, 2008 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State sophomore outfielder Ryan Chenoweth has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office.
Chenoweth hit .455 with three home runs last week, helping Ball State post a 4-1 record and a three-game sweep of MAC preseason favorite Kent State. He belted his third home run of the week in the sixth inning of Saturday's game at Kent State. The solo shot proved to be the decisive run in the Cardinals' 6-5 victory over the Golden Flashes.
Chenoweth's first two home runs of the week came in the same inning during Wednesday's 20-12 non-conference victory over Anderson. He blasted two home runs as part of an 11-run second inning as the Cardinals took control of the game. Chenoweth also notched a double in the Anderson contest. He finished the week with a total of four extra-base hits and a slugging percentage of 1.364.
The sophomore outfielder owns a .419 batting average on the season and has logged a season slugging percentage of .839.
With the weekend sweep, Ball State improved its record to 12-9 (3-0 MAC). The Cardinals now open a five-game homestand. Ball State hosts Indiana Tech on Tuesday and Dayton on Wednesday. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
The Cardinals return to MAC action this weekend with a three-game home series against MAC East foe Buffalo.
Chenoweth's honor is the third individual award of the season for Ball State. Two weeks ago, the Cardinals swept the weekly MAC West awards with sophomore catcher Zach Dygert earning Player of the Week honors and freshman right-hander Kolbrin Vitek winning the Pitcher of the Week award.
