November 09, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite five players with double-figure kills, the Ball state women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13) setback to Akron Sunday afternoon at Worthen Arena.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 11-18 (6-8 Mid-American Conference). Akron improves to 11-14 (5-9 MAC) with the victory.
BSU's Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) and Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) tied for team-high honors with 14 kills. Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) add 12 markers, while Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) scored 10 each.
The Cardinals also had five players collect double-figure digs in the match, led by Alyssa Rio's (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) match-high of 27. Sullivan added 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season, while Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) dished out 54 assists to go along with 12 digs for her 15th double-double.
BSU's local duo of Emily Fisher (Muncie, Ind./Central H.S.) and Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) also posted double-figure digs with 13 and 11, respectively.
Akron's Brionna Patterson paced all players with 17 kills in the contest, while combining with Tina Dimitrijevs, who tallied 10 kills, for the match-winning block. Liz Martin added 12 kills for the Zips, while Jennifer Stewart added a team-best 23 digs.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals out-hit the Zips .226 (64-24-177) to .176 (60-27-188). Akron's biggest advantage came at the service line, where they racked up eight service aces, including six from Kara Smith.
After the team's battled to a 16-16 tie in the opening set, the Cardinals used kills from Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) and Phillips, as well as a pair of Akron attack errors, to pull ahead 20-16. However, after a BSU ball handling error and a kill from Patterson, Smith rack off four-straight service aces to swing the momentum back to the Zips. Akron went on to win the frame 25-21.
Ball State played to another 20-16 advantage in the second set. This time, they were able to hold the momentum, as kills from Breivogel and Kakatolis helped them play to a 23-19 edge. After a Akron attack error, Sullivan recorded a solo block to give BSU a 25-19 second set victory.
With Akron leading 20-18 in the third set, a kill from Boyd and a Zip's attack error knotted the score at 20. The Cardinals were not able to break through, however, as Akron rattled off five of the final six points to win the frame 25-21.
Ball State dominated the early portion of the fourth set, playing to a 20-7 advantage with the help of four kills from Phillips and two from Breivogel. Akron followed with eight-straight points, including three blocks and a Megan Rodriguez service ace, to draw within five at 20-15. After a service error ended the rally, the Cardinals went on to win the frame 25-21 on a kill from Breivogel.
The Cardinals once again played to an early advantage in the fifth frame, building a 7-4 edge. The Zips followed with four of the next five points to tie the set at 8-8. After Akron reached set point at 14-12, on a kill from Courtney Jarvis, a Sullivan kill kept the Cardinals alive, but it was not enough, as Patterson and Dimitrijevs combined for the match-winning block.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes out the regular season at Worthen Arena next weekend with a Friday match versus Western Michigan and a Saturday showdown with Northern Illinois. Both contests are set for 7 p.m. starts.
