November 21, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team saw its 2008 season come to an end with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) MAC Tournament Quarterfinal loss to Ohio Friday evening at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio.
With the loss, the Cardinals end the season with 12-21 overall record, while Ohio advances to the MAC Tournament Semifinals to face Miami who scored a 3-2 victory over Northern Illinois earlier in the day.
In the loss to the Bobcats, the Cardinals hit .256 (39-16-90) as a team, with Charde' Phillips (Elyria ,Ohio/Elyria H.S.) and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S) leading the team with 10 kills each.
Ball State's Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) was the night's top defender, collecting 12 digs, while Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) dished out a team-best 31 digs.
Ohio was paced offensively by Ellen Herman's 13 kills, while Meghan Simons added 10. The Bobcats finished the match with a .359 (45-12-92) attacking mark. Sarah Petrulis was Ohio's top defender, tallying 11 digs.
Another key to the Ohio victory was their seven service aces, including three from Meryl Bender. BSU, in comparison had just one ace.
While the Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-1 edge in the opening set, the Cardinals quickly recovered to tie the set at 4-4, thanks in part to kills from Phillips and Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.). The Cardinals remained within one point at 13-12, only to see Ohio build a five-point lead at 22-17.
Ball State responded with the next five points, starting with an Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) kill and aided by a pair of markers from Phillips and a Breivogel tally, to tie the set at 22. However, after an Ohio timeout, a BSU service error, a kill from Ellen Herman and a Ball State attack error ended the frame at 25-22. In the second set, it was the Cardinals who jumped out to an early advantage, as four-straight BSU kills forced an early Ohio timeout. The lead was short-lived, however, as Ohio scored six of the next seven points and eventually pulled ahead 20-15. Ball State was able to cut the lead to one point at 20-19, but could not pull ahead, dropping the set 25-22 on a Herman kill. Set three saw the teams battle to an 8-8 tie, before kills from Ohio's Sue Jacobi and Jane Sytsma help spark a 10-2 run for the tournament's No. 2 seed, pushing the score to 18-10. Much like the first two sets, the Cardinals were able to rally back into the set, cutting the lead to three at 20-17. However, Ball State could not push through in the end, falling 25-18 on Bender's third service ace on the night.
