November 21, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team saw two of its freshmen honored by the Mid-American Conference Thursday evening at the 2008 MAC Tournament Banquet, as Jennifer Boyd picked up All-MAC Second Team honors, while Brittany McGinnis, along with Boyd, was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team. The MAC awards are voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
"Both Jennifer and Brittany have done everything we have asked of them this season," said BSU head coach Dave Boos. "Earning All-MAC honors shows not only our staff, but other coaches around the league as well, have respect for the hard work and dedication these two student-athletes have shown on the court. They are going to be bright stars for our program over the next three years. With both returning next season, along with the remainder of our squad, the future of the program is in excellent hands."
A freshman middle blocker, Boyd picks up All-MAC Second Team and Freshman Team honors by entering Friday's MAC Tournament quarterfinal match as Ball State's top attacker based on hitting percentage. After tying a career-high with a .474 (10-1-19) attack percentage in Tuesday's MAC Tournament first round victory over Eastern Michigan, Boyd is currently hitting .313, which ranks sixth among all league players and second among MAC freshmen. In league-only matches, Boyd hit .340, to rank her fourth in the conference.
BSU's first All-MAC Second Team selection since the 2005, Boyd also ranks second on the team with 74 total blocks for a 0.70 blocks-per-set average. She also averages 1.93 kills-per-set, having smashed 203 kills so far this season, including a career-high 17 versus Toledo (Nov. 6). For the year, Boyd has hit .300-or-better in 14 of the 31 matches she has played.
A freshman setter, McGinnis picked up All-MAC Freshman Team accolades after proving to be one of the league's best all-around players. She enters Friday's match versus No. 2 seed Ohio leading the team with 17 assist-dig double-doubles on the season. McGinnis, who averages 9.79 assists-per-set, also ranks first on the team in aces (31), second in digs (308) and fourth in total blocks (59), while producing 0.63 kills-per-set.
In addition, McGinnis was the third BSU player to collect 20 digs in a match this season, when she turned in a career-high 20 at Bowling Green (Oct. 24). She also dished out a career-best 56 assists versus the Falcons.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to advance to its 18th MAC Tournament semifinal match in program history Friday night, when it battles No. 2 seed Ohio in the 7 p.m. quarterfinal match at the SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio. The match can be heard live on 91.3 WCRD, as well as online at www.ballstatesports.com.
