MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team ran into a hot Central Michigan squad Saturday night, as the Chippewas tallied a 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-17) victory over the Cardinals at Rose Arena.
With the loss, Ball State returns to .500 in Mid-American Conference play at 6-6, while falling to 11-16 overall. Central Michigan improves to 16-8 (10-2 MAC) with their eighth victory in the last nine matches.
Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) paced the Ball State offense with eight kills, while Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) added seven markers. Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) topped the BSU defense with 11 digs.
Central Michigan's Kaitlyn Schultz led all players with 11 kills, while Whitney Evers added 10. Defensively, Alexis Lonneman was the matches' top defender with 12 digs.
Overall, the Chippewas held a .349 (39-10-83) to .157 (32-18-89) attacking advantage in the contest, while dominating play at the net with 11 team blocks to the Cardinals two.
Despite jumping out to a 4-1 advantage in the opening set, the Cardinals were forced to quickly use their first timeout, as CMU rallied off the next seven points to gain an 8-4 edge. During the run, CMU's Sarah Warner and Kaitlyn Hurt tallied three blocks to stop BSU's offensive momentum. From there, the host Chippewas played to an eight-point lead at 14-6, before winning the set 25-15.
After the teams traded three-point runs to open the second set, Central Michigan added three more points and pulled out to a 15-8 lead. The Cardinals were able to cut the gap to four points at 17-13 after a kill from Green and a Rio ace. With CMU leading 21-16, the Cardinals came to life once again, rattling off six of the next seven points to tie the frame at 22.
CMU responded with the next two points, to reach set point at 24-22. Ball State did not go down without a fight, however, as kills from Breivogel and Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) tied the set at 24. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Chippewas answered with kills from Kate Fissel and Hurt to win the frame 26-24.
A Central Michigan service error gave the Cardinals the first point of the third frame, but the hosts responded with the next six points to build 6-1 lead. Ball State was able to battle within two points on five occasions, including the 11-9 mark. However, CMU picked up the next six points and eventually won the set 25-17.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Thursday, when Toledo visits Worthen Arena for a 7 p.m. showdown.
