THE GAME:
Ball State will open the 2007 season with Thursday's game against the Miami University RedHawks . . . Thursday's contest will be the season opener for both teams . . . Ball State defeated Miami University 20-17 last season in a contest at Yager Stadium in Oxford, Ohio.
SCHEUMANN STADIUM: Thursday marks Ball State's first game in the newly renovated Scheumann Stadium . . . The renovations include installation of FieldTurf, construction of a larger press box and entertainment center, private boxes, club seating, enhanced ticket offices, better concession facilities, more and improved restrooms and a new exterior around the stadium.
THE NAMES: The John B. and June M. Scheumann Stadium is named in honor of John Scheumann and his wife, June, who provided $4 million to the campaign . . . John, a former Cardinal defensive tackle, graduated in 1971 with a degree in accounting . . . Co-founder and former chairman and chief executive officer of Crossman Communities, he is now chairman and CEO of Tempest Homes . . . Paul and Patricia Kozel made a $1.25 million gift and have been honored with the naming of the Kozel Media Center . . . Paul is president and treasurer of Chesterfield Management, while Patricia is vice president and secretary of the company . . . John and Janice Fisher are longtime benefactors of the university and provided the largest private gift to Ball State's first major campaign, Wings for the Future, in the early 1990s . . . The football training complex has been named in their honor . . . John is a former president and chairman of Ball Corporation . . . Janice, who has been active in civic affairs, is the daughter of Edmund B. Ball, one of the five industrialist brothers who provided funding to create Ball State University.
TELEVISION: Ball State's game vs. Miami University will be televised live on Comcast Local in Muncie, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and parts of Michigan . . . Ben Holden will handle the play-by-play and Rob Otto will provide the color commentary . . . Satellite coordinates for the game are not yet available.
RADIO: All of Ball State's football games will be broadcast on the Ball State Radio Network . . . WLBC FM 104.1 is in its 52nd year as the flagship station for the Cardinals . . . Other network affiliates for 2007 include ESPN 950 in Indianapolis and ESPN 1380 in Fort Wayne . . . Morry Mannies is in his 52nd year as the "Voice of the Cardinals" . . . Former Ball State quarterback and punter Mark O'Connell will provide the color commentary . . . Jaime Lemna will handle the sideline duties at all Ball State home games . . . THE COACHES: Ball State head coach Brady Hoke (Ball State ?82) is in his fifth year as the head coach at his alma mater . . . Hoke is one of only 18 coaches in the country to be coaching at their alma mater in 2007 . . . Miami University head coach Shane Montgomery (North Carolina State ?90) is in his third year as the head coach for the RedHawks.
