May 09, 2007 | Baseball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Ball State baseball team dropped a non-conference contest 12-4 Tuesday on the road against in-state rival Indiana State.
Wayne Bond led the Cardinals with three hits and two RBI. The junior center fielder finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Cardinals return to action Friday at 3 p.m. with the first game of a three-game series against Northern Illinois at Ball Diamond. The Cardinals originally had a game with Huntington scheduled for Wednesday, but that contest was cancelled earlier in the week.
In Tuesday's game, Ball State (16-31) found the scoreboard first but couldn't hold the lead. The Cardinals pushed across the first run when they executed a first-inning double steal that scored Bond.
Indiana State (22-23) quickly responded with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning. The Sycamores then took command with nine runs over the next three innings.
Indiana State second baseman Ryan Bond - Wayne Bond's brother - led the Sycamores and matched his younger brother with three hits. Nick Ciolli, Dave Brumagin and Casey Martin each had two RBI for Indiana State.
Ball State managed two runs in the fourth inning on a Zach Dygert home run and an RBI triple from Bond. Dygert's homer was the first of his collegiate career. The Cardinals later tacked on one more run on a seventh-inning homer from Bond.
Indiana State added two runs in the eighth inning to open up its eight-run margin.
Skyler Pearson earned the win on the mound for the Sycamores, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. Brad Piatt took the loss for Ball State.
