March 30, 2007 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- For the second time this season, Ball State senior pitcher Ryan DeGeeter has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week. DeGeeter has earned the honor for the week ending March 25, as announced Friday by the conference office.
A four-year starter for the Cardinals, DeGeeter is an exercise science major, who carries a 3.747 GPA.
Sunday, in his most recent start, DeGeeter earned his fourth consecutive win on the mound. The senior right-hander had his longest outing of the season, throwing 8.1 innings in the final game of Ball State's MAC-opening series versus Akron.
After allowing one run in the first inning and another in the second, DeGeeter settled in. He allowed just three baserunners over the next six innings, and none advanced past second base. In four of the six innings, DeGeeter retired the Zips in order.
After allowing two runs in the ninth, DeGeeter exited the game to a standing ovation. For the afternoon, he allowed four runs on six hits, improving his record to a team-best 4-2. His four wins lead the MAC.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
DeGeeter also earned the award earlier this season for the week ending March 4. He is the fourth male two-time recipient of the award for the 2006-07 academic year.
With the Cardinals in Oxford, Ohio, for a three-game set with Miami, DeGeeter is scheduled to make his next start Sunday in the series finale. Ball State enters the weekend 11-13 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
