The Week Ahead: The Ball State women's volleyball team will host IUPUI Wednesday at 7 p.m. in its lone match this week.
Ball State on Television:Wednesday's Ball State women's volleyball match versus IUPUI will be televised locally by the Ball State Sports Network (Muncie Cable Channel 2) . . . In addition, the broadcast will be streamed over the internet at the following address: http://dvisweb1.bsu.edu/streaming/stream.asp?id=23 . . . The BSSN will also televise the Sept. 28 contest vs. Toledo . . . Chris Taylor will provide the play-by-play action, while former four-year letterwinner Rhonda (Gardemann) Murr (1991-94) will provide the color commentary versus IUPUI.
Last Week: Ball State dropped all three matches in last weekend's "Bama Bash" hosted by the University of Alabama . . . BSU opened play in the two-day, four-team tournament last Friday morning with a 0-3 (28-30, 10-30, 22-30) loss to eventual tournament champion Wisconsin-Milwaukee . . . In Friday night's featured match, the Cardinals suffered a 0-3 (25-30, 25-30, 15-30) setback to host Alabama . . . BSU closed the "Bama Bash" with a hard-fought 2-3 (34-32, 28-30, 19-30, 30-21, 13-15) loss to Mercer Saturday morning.
Ball State vs. IUPUI:The Cardinals hold an 8-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Jaguars, despite suffering a 1-3 (28-30, 30-28, 23-30, 21-30) loss in Indianapolis last season . . . BSU is 6-0 versus IUPUI in Muncie, including a 3-0 record in Worthen Arena.
About the Cardinals:Ball State enters the week with a 1-5 record after losing all three matches in last weekend's "Bama Bash" . . . Freshman Julie Breivogel currently paces the Cardinals with a 3.38 kills-per-game average, while sophomore Christine Kennedy is second at 2.78 . . . Senior Amanda McCormick anchors the BSU defense, averaging a league-best 6.38 digs per game . . . Kennedy is Ball State's top blocker, averaging 0.81 blocks per game, while Angie Parrellis the team's main setter, averaging 10.10 assists per game . . . As a team, the Cardinals average 13.29 kpg, 11.95 apg, 16.29 dpg and 1.95 bpg . . . BSU's opponents are averaging 16.62 kpg, 15.52 apg, 18.57 dpg and 2.31 bpg.
About the Jaguars:IUPUI enters the week with a 2-5 record after going 1-3 last week . . . Last Thursday, the Jaguars suffered a 1-3 (30-28, 30-32, 16-30, 26-30) loss to Evansville . . . Over the weekend, IUPUI posted a 1-2 record in the Western Michigan Clarion Classic, falling to WMU (1-3; 13-30, 11-30, 30-28, 14-30) and Northwestern (0-3; 16-30, 20-30, 23-30) before topping Charleston Southern (3-0; 30-15, 30-22, 30-16) . . . Junior Carol Newell currently paces IUPUI with a 2.84 kills-per-game average, while junior Devika Bellamy is second at 2.38 . . . Senior Christy McConnell anchors the Jaguars defense with a 4.00 digs-per-game average . . . Freshman Ashley Johnson is IUPUI's top blocker, averaging 0.70 blocks per game, while Bellamy and freshman Danielle Goodnight split time as the team's setter averaging 5.38 and 5.28 assists per game, respectively . . . As a team, the Jaguars average 12.32 kpg, 11.72 apg, 15.44 dpg and 1.32 bpg . . . IUPUI's opponents average 15.08 kpg, 14.00 apg, 15.76 dpg and 2.56 bpg.
Cardinals on the Radio:WCRD 91.3 FM will carry all of Ball State's home matches live throughout the 2006 season . . . In addition, the station will cover several of the team's away matches - - Sept. 19 at Wright State, Sept. 22 at Miami and Sept. 26 at Butler . . . Eric Ryan will serve as the play-by-play analyst for the season, while Lauren Bielenberg and Kelly Schroeing will provide the color commentary.
Digging It Up:After racking up 71 digs in last weekend's "Bama Bash", senior libero Amanda McCormick moved to the top of the Mid-American Conference rankings with a 6.38 digs-per-game average . . . In addition, she has the two highest match dig totals in the league to date this season with 41 versus IPFW (Aug. 26) and 37 versus Mercer (Sept. 2) . . . McCormick enters the week with 1,579 career digs (861 at Ball State and 718 at Nebraska) . . . Her 861 digs as a member of the Cardinals place her 16th on BSU's career-list . . . She needs 139 more digs to become just the 11th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs at Ball State.
Breivogel Continues to Shine:With a team-best 37 kills in BSU's three matches last weekend, freshman Julie Breivogelnow paces the Cardinals with a 3.38 kill-per-game average . . . After smashing six kills versus UW-Milwaukee and 12 at Alabama, the 6-0 outside attacker tallied a career-high 19 kills versus Mercer to go along with career-highs of 55 attempts and two service aces . . . In addition, she logged 12 digs versus the Bears for her second career double-double.
Cochran Moves Closer to Elite Company:After posting 13 kills at last weekend, senior Kelly Cochran moved her career total to 972, which leaves her 28 shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills . . . Earlier this season, Cochran became only the 10th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs . . . When Cochran breaks the 1,000 kills mark, she will be just the fifth player in program history to reach 1,000 in both categories, joining Sarah Obras (1,975 kills/1,652 digs), Megan Hammons (1,827 kills/1,204 digs), Lindsay Follin (1,495 kills/1,067 digs) and Katie Butts(1,362 kills/1,109 digs).
May Tallies Three Career-Highs Versus Mercer:Junior Brittany May tallied several career-highs in the Cardinals' five game loss to Mercer last Saturday . . . Her 13 kills, 31 attempts and three service aces verses the Bears were all career-high marks.
The Youth Factor:Of the 14 players to see action for the Cardinals this season, nine are either transfers or freshmen . . . Freshman Julie Breivogel and sophomore transfer Christine Kennedy have made the biggest impact, ranking first (3.38) and second (2.76), respectively, on the team in kills per game . . . Redshirt freshmen Rachel Alcorn, Elaina Kakatolis, Caitlin Morency and Madison Monk; true freshmen Cassie Conner, and Ana Gabriela Pedrosa as well as redshirt transfer freshman Brittany Warnke have also spent time on the court for BSU this season.
What to Watch for Wednesday:Kelly Cochran enters Wednesday's match versus IUPUI 28 kills shy of 1,000 for her career . . . Amanda McCormick needs 19 digs to break into the top 15 in career digs at Ball State . . . Kirby Gibson needs five blocks to bring her career total to 200 . . . Angie Parrell needs 104 assists to reach 2,000 in her career . . . Julie Breivogel is 29 kills shy of 100 for the season.
