Records Fall as Ball State Women's Volleyball Tops Toledo in Five

Muncie, Ind. - - Behind a school-record 50 digs from senior libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) and a career-best 24 kills from freshman Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), the Ball State (5-10, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team posted a thrilling 3-2 (30-20, 29-31, 26-30, 30-21, 15-10) come-from-behind victory over Toledo (4-12, 1-2 MAC) Thursday evening at Worthen Arena.

In the opening game, the teams battled to a 7-7 tie before a back-to-back Cochran kills and a kill from May gave BSU a 10-7 advantage. From there, BSU would not let Toledo get closer than two points, building a 10-point edge at 26-16 and eventually winning the game by 10 at 30-20 on a kill from Parrell.
The second stanza saw the teams play to an 8-8 tie before a 5-2 Toledo run put the Rockets ahead by three at 13-10. After a McCormick service ace got the Cardinals within two points, Breivogel would score kills on three of the next four points to tie the score at 14-14. After playing to a 20-20 tie, the Cardinals would build a five-point lead at the 26-21 mark and looked poised to win at 29-24, before a kill from Toledo's Sarah Kreher and back-to-back aces from UT's Lori Ruth sparked a 7-0 Rockets run, giving the visitors a 31-29 game two win.
The third game saw 12 ties and six lead changes early, as the two teams battled to a 20-20 tie. From that point, Toledo would go on a 5-0 run and hold a seven-point advantage at the 28-21 mark. BSU would battle back within three points, at 28-25 and 29-26, before a Kate Bean kill ended the game 30-26 in favor of Toledo.
The Cardinals would jump ahead early in the fourth game, leading by as many as four points - - at 13-9 - - before allowing UT to tie the set at 16-16. This time it would be Ball State going on a huge run, scoring the next six points to pull ahead 22-16. McCormick would start the run with her second ace of the night, while Breivogel added three more kills in the run. BSU would eventually win the game by nine - - at 30-21 - - on a block assists from Gibson and May.
The fifth and final game saw the Cardinals jump ahead 6-1 and never look back. Kennedy and Breivogel would each tally a pair of kills in the opening run, while a UT attack error and ball handling error gave BSU its other two points.
With the Cardinals holding a four-point lead at the break, Toledo would manage to draw within a pair of points at 9-7. However, a block assists from Gibson and Parrell plus back-to-back kills from May gave the Cardinals there five-point lead back at 12-7. Cochran would give BSU match point at 14-9 after smashing two kills in three points, while Breivogel ended the game at 15-10 with her career-best 24th marker of the night.
In addition to her 24 kills, Breivogel finished the night with a career-best five blocks, five digs and a pair of assists.
May added six digs and an ace to her 13 kills and seven blocks, while Kennedy posted a trifecta of eights - - kills, digs and block assists - - as well as a pair of assists.
Parrell would add a match-best 56 assists, seven digs, six kills and an ace to her statistical totals, while Pedrosa recorded a pair of aces to go along with her 13 digs and Gibson logged three kills in addition to her seven blocks.
Also factoring in the win for the Cardinals were freshmen
As a team, BSU out-hit the Rockets .216 (74-24-232) to .108 (68-41-250) in the victory, while holding a 123-119 edge in digs, a 21-11 lead in total blocks and a 9-6 advantage in aces.
Kreher and Bean each tallied 14 kills in the loss for Toledo, while TaNeisha Winters and Liz Sundburg added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Bean would also pace the Rockets with 39 digs on the night, while Emi Holsclaw scored 21 digs, Sarich added 19 digs and Stephanie Kersting posted 14 digs.
