Women's Volleyball Closes Nike/Active Ankle Tournament with Loss to Michigan State

Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State (1-2) women's volleyball team closed play in the 2006 Ball State Nike/Active Ankle Weekend with a 0-3 (24-30, 26-30, 20-30) loss to tournament champion Michigan State (3-0) Saturday evening at Worthen Arena.
In the night session's first match, Xavier improved to 2-1 with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-23, 30-25) victory over winless IPFW (0-3).
One plus from BSU's Saturday night loss to MSU came in the form of freshman Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), who recorded 15 kills and hit a team and career-best .364 (15-3-33) attack percentage. She also logged seven digs in the contests.
Sophomore Christine Kennedy (San Marcos, Calif./University of San Diego H.S.) also turned in solid numbers, posting 10 kills, eight digs and three blocks. For her play throughout the tournament, Kennedy was named to the all-tournament squad.
Junior setter Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) posted her second double-double of the day vs. Michigan State, logging a team-best 11 digs and 31 assists. In addition, she collected three kills and a block assists.
Also factoring in the loss for BSU were senior
Three MSU players tallied double-figure kills in the contest, including tournament MVP Katie Johnson. Johnson and Ashley Schatzle each pounded 15 kills in the win, while Mischelle Nelson tallied 10.
MSU libero Nicole Colaluca tallied a match-best 20 digs, while the team's setter, Allison Ianni dished out 47 assists and guided the Spartans to a .256 (58-24-133) attack percentage. Both players were also named to the all-tournament team.
As a team, Ball State was limited to a .185 (40-18-119) attack percentage in the contest, while MSU held a 56 to 42 edge in digs. Both teams tallied seven total blocks.
Rounding out the 2006 Ball State Nike/Active Ankle Weekend All-Tournament Team were Xavier's Astyn Bjorklund and Jen Welsh.
