MUNCIE, Ind. -- Todd Lane has been named interim head coach for the Ball State women's track and field and cross country teams for the 2006-07 season, according to BSU director of athletics Tom Collins. Lane has served as assistant coach for both teams the past two years. He takes over the position recently vacated after the departure of Sue Parks, who took over as head coach of Eastern Michigan's women's track and cross country programs.
Lane completed his second season as assistant coach at Ball State this past spring, helping the Cardinals to a third-place finish at the 2006 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. At the league event, he helped tutor Jennifer McCoy to the heptathlon crown, All-MAC First-Team recognition and an eventual appearance in the NCAA Championships. He guided Tamelca Lewis to first-team all-league honors after taking top honors in the triple jump. In addition, he helped Yvonne Ferguson and Amber Williams to Second Team All-MAC accolades with runner-up finishes in the 400-meter dash and 100 hurdles, respectively.
Lane helped Ball State to a second-place finish at the 2006 MAC Indoor Championships, where he guided McCoy to a second-place finish in the pentathlon. In addition, he helped Williams to runner-up finishes in the 60 hurdles, 60 dash and 200 dash plus Terri Abraham to runner-up marks in the long and triple jumps.
In his initial season at Ball State, Lane helped the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish at the MAC Indoor Meet and a sixth-place mark at the outdoor event. Four of his athletes advanced to NCAA Regionals during the outdoor campaign.
Lane came to BSU after serving as head track and field coach at Georgia Southern for five years, where he oversaw the program since its inception in 1999. He helped GSU to back-to-back runner-up titles at the Southern Conference Championships in his last two seasons at the school and was honored as the conference's Coach of the Year both seasons.
Prior to Georgia Southern, Lane served as head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn.
Lane earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Luther College (Iowa) in 1995 and his master's degree in sport management from Georgia Southern in 1997. He is a USATF Level I instructor and USATF Level II certified in the sprints/hurdles, jumps, throws and the multi-events.
Lane's wife, Turena, is one of the top marathon runners in the United States and has competed for Team U.S.A. at the world championships. She has served as a volunteer assistant for BSU the past two years.
