BSU 4, Akron 2
March 26, 2006 | Baseball
Following a double down the left field line by senior catcher Matt Singleton (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) in the opening frame, senior first baseman Brad Miller (Muncie, Ind./Central) nailed a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead.
Akron tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning as Marcus Geiselman singled through the left side to drive in Vince Chiera and Doug McNulty. After a walk and single, the Zips loaded the bases on a close call at third base that would have ended the inning, but a strikeout of the next batter ended that threat.
BSU added the game-winning run in the top of the fourth as redshirt-sophomore right fielder Justin Rogers (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham) hit an RBI single to right field off the first baseman's glove, driving in senior second baseman Kyle Dygert (Angola, Ind./Angola). Dygert reached on a walk and advanced to second on senior third baseman C.J. Webb's (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) single through the left side.
Dygert scored another run in the top of the ninth after hitting an infield single, advancing to third on Webb's single to right center and finally reaching home on Rogers' fielder's choice to give Ball State a 4-2 lead.
The Zips posted a hit in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't recover from their two-run hole.
A few of the defensive keys included throwing a runner out at home and turning a double play with one out and runners on the corners.
Junior pitcher Ryan DeGeeter (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw) (2-3) made his sixth start of the year, going five innings for the win.
Senior Kory Bucklew (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) came on in relief at the start of the sixth inning and closed out the game to earn his second save of the year.
The Cardinals host Wright State in their first home game of the season Tuesday afternoon at Ball Diamond.
