Softball Opens Season with Two Wins

Ball State kicked off its 2006 softball season with a pair of wins at the Evansville Invitational. The Cardinals scored a 5-3 victory over Ole Miss in the opener and then a 6-2 decision over the host Purple Aces in the nightcap.
Mississippi jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one-half inning of play, but Ball State answered with three in the third and one each in the fifth and sixth. The Cardinals outhit the Rebels 10-4, with Abby Gross collecting three in the game. Allie Pennock and Katie Pilger each had two. Nicki Hellem picked up the decision, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven.
In game two, BSU scored six unanswered points before the Aces got on the score board. Amanda Pick was 3-of-3 from the plate with three RBI and also earned the pitching decision. She scattered four hits in the game and struck out four batters.
The Cardinals, who accumulated 19 hits on the day, play the same two opponents tomorrow -- Ole Miss at 11 a.m. and Evansville at 3 p.m.
