BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Ball State University baseball team (1-2) defeated the University of Alabama at Birmingham 11-10 in 13 innings in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field, before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.
Kyle Dygert managed the only hit for BSU in the second game, while Ryan DeGeeter suffered the loss. DeGeeter pitched six innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked two batters and struck out three.
In the first game tied at 10-10, Justin Rogers started things off for BSU by singling to left field and Phil Bednar pushed him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Brian Meyer walked to first, while Mike Sullivan grounded into a fielder's choice at second to put runners at the corners.
Sullivan stole second base, and both he and Rogers advanced on a wild pitch to Singleton to give Ball State an 11-10 lead with runners at the corners. Dygert popped up to left field for the final out of the inning.
UAB pinch-hitter Donny Muth hit a bouncer up the middle and beat out the throw to first to get a runner on base after two outs for the home team, but Heyne closed the game with a strikeout.
Heyne picked up his second career victory and finished with five innings pitched, six strikeouts, zero earned runs and surrendered only one hit.
The Cardinals return to action with a Friday afternoon game against Towson at the Citadel Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
