Slow Start Dooms Women's Volleyball at Central Michigan

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. - - Despite a late rally in the third game, the Ball State (6-15, 3-6 Mid-American Conference) women's volleyball team could not recover from a slow start, falling to Central Michigan (14-7, 4-5 MAC) by a score of 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 32-30) Friday night at Rose Arena.
After falling behind two-games-to-one and 27-23 in the third frame, the Cardinals rallied behind a mostly freshman lineup to tie the score at 27-27 on kills from Ana Gabriela Pedrosa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Arnaldo H.S.) and
After CMU's Sarah Winter broke BSU's four-point run, Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) - - who tied for match-high honors with 22 digs - - tallied a kill to push the score to 28-28. Three straight errors pushed the score to 30-29 in favor of the hosts before Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) chipped in her team-high seventh kill of the night to lock the score at 30.
Unfortunately, Mary Ochmanek would follow with her match-best 13th marker of the contest, to break the tie, while a BSU attack error ended the game at 32-30 and the match at 3-0.
Prior to the third game, BSU would drop the first set 30-22 and the second game 30-18.
With her 22 digs, senior libero McCormick upped her career total to 1,995, making her five shy of reaching the 2,000 career digs plateau.
Along with her seven kills, Breivogel would finish the night with eight digs and a team-best two blocks - - one solo and one assists.
Three Cardinals finished the night with four kills - - Kakatolis,
Pedrosa would also finish the match with nine digs, a team-best two aces and a solo stuff.
Freshman setter Cassie Conner (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.) made her second career MAC start in the contest, notching 18 assists, two digs and one kill.
Also factoring in the loss for the Cardinals were juniors Angie Parrell (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights H.S.) with four assists, two kills and two digs and
As a team, the Cardinals were limited to a season-low .047 (29-23-127) attack percentage, while the Chippewas hit .221 (53-22-140). WMU also held a 66-54 advantage in digs, a 6-4 lead in blocks and a 6-3 edge in aces.
For Central Michigan, Ochmanek was one of three players to tag double-figure kills with her match-best 13. The Chippewas' Alexis Lonneman would tie for match-high honors with 22 digs.
