September 21, 2005 | Softball
Ball State, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Terri Laux, returns 11 letterwinners from last year's squad plus adds a group of seven newcomers to its 2005-06 team.
Offensively, the Cardinals are led by the return of juniors Kelli Jeziorski and Taylor Yancey plus sophomores Amanda Pick and Abby Gross. Jeziorski led the team with a .272 batting average last spring, while tieing for top honors with 44 hits. Pick matched the team-best 44-hit total, while compiling a .259 mark from the plate. She also led BSU with 19 runs scored. Gross was third with a .257 mark and 39 hits, while Yancey tied for second with 15 RBI.
Senior Nicki Hellem is Ball State's top returning pitcher after compiling a 3.31 ERA with 64 strikeouts. Classmate Quincy Duran, Pick and freshmen Laura Masch and Abby Zollman round out the pitching corp.
After Sunday's two-game series, Ball State will make a return trip to West Lafayette Oct. 2 for the Purdue Invitational to take on the host Boilermakers at 2 p.m. and IUPUI at 4 p.m. Those games will conclude BSU's fall competition.
