Cardinals Pick Up Summer Baseball Awards
August 18, 2005 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Five members of the 2005 Ball State baseball team picked up awards in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, while four incoming recruits participated in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association North-South All-Star Series.
"Our student-athletes have once again had a very successful summer," said Ball State head coach Greg Beals. "These awards and honors are an indication of their work ethic and desire to compete and get better."
A GLSCL All-Star a season ago, redshirt sophomore Ben Snyder (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue H.S.) was named the league's Tony Lucadella Top Pitching Prospect, marking the second-straight season a Cardinal has earned the honor after Joe Ness - - a sixth round Major League Baseball draft pick in 2005 - - claimed it last summer.
"Ben being named best pitching prospect was no surprise. He has a lot of athletic ability and great stuff. Ben is entering a very important year, as he will be the ace of the staff, and we are looking forward to another great season."
Also picking up awards in the GLSCL were Luke Behning (Ossian, Ind./Concordia Lutheran), Richie Fralick (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), Kyle Heyne (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater H.S.) and Brad Miller (Muncie, Ind./Central H.S.). Behning and Fralick were all-league first team selections and participated in the league's all-star game, while Heyne and Miller picked up second-team accolades.
"Luke and Richie are two players who have a chance to make a big impact on this year's squad. The quality of their summer league innings was very impressive."
In addition to the GLSCL awards, four incoming players were selected to participate in the IHSBCA North-South All-Star Series. Jason Jamerson (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) was named the annual event's Most Valuable Player, while Jay Broughton (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central H.S.), Ryan Schmidt (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont H.S.) and Adam Quinn (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point H.S.) also played in the series. Jamerson and Broughton played for the South, while Schmidt and Quinn played for the North.
"Having four of our incoming freshmen play in the Indiana North-South All-Star Series is great exposure for our program and provides a great experience for those guys. Being named the series' MVP is an awesome honor for Jason. He is a player, loves the game and loves to compete. It seems the bigger the stage, the better he plays. Jason won this honor on the field."
