MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team concluded its 2005 spring schedule with a 6-7-1 overall record. The Cardinals went 0-3 at the Miami Tournament, 2-1-1 at the IUPUI Tournament, 2-1 at the Ball State Tournament and 2-2 at the Purdue Tournament.
At the Miami Tournament, the Cardinals posted a 0-3 record, dropping matches to Miami (19-30, 30-17, 15-10), Florida State (30-26, 32-30, 15-9) and Findlay (27-30, 30-26, 15-12). Kelly Cochran paced the Cardinals' offense with 19 kills in six games. She also posted 21 digs for a 3.50 digs-per-game average. Rachel Refenes tallied 15 kills in 7.5 games, while recorded a team-high 29 digs and 2.13 blocks-per-game.
Ball State posted a 2-1-1 record at the IUPUI Jaguar Spring Invitational, picking up wins against Cincinnati (30-27, 13-30, 15-12) and Indiana (30-26, 30-28), while tying Northern Kentucky (27-30, 30-25) and falling to Indianapolis (30-19, 17-30, 10-15). Refenes paced the Cardinals in kills, posting 43 in nine games for a 4.78 average. She also tallied 3.67 digs-per-game and 0.89 blocks-per-game. Heather Burleson and Cochran each had 38 digs in nine games for 4.22 digs-per-game averages. Angie Parrell paced the Cardinals at the net with 10 total blocks and an 1.111 blocks-per-game average.
At the Ball State Tournament, the Cardinals posted a 2-1 record starting the day with a 24-30, 30-28, 19-17 victory over IPFW, before falling to Kentucky 30-28, 30-28. BSU's final match of the day was a 30-18, 30-21 victory over Butler. Cochran paced the Cardinals in both kills and digs on the day, recording 27 and 37, respectively. Burleson added 20 kill and 26 digs, while Kristin Westhof posted 21 kills and 15 total blocks and Refenes recorded 17 kills and 11 total blocks.
Ball State concluded the fall with a 2-2 ledger at the Purdue Tournament. After dropping contests to IUPUI (17-30, 28-30) and Michigan State (26-30, 27-30), the Cardinals rebounded with wins over Akron (30-26, 30-24) and Ashland (30-25, 30-22). Once again it was Cochran pacing the team with 21 kills, with Refenes right behind at 20. Refenes also had a team-high nine total blocks in the event, while Stephanie Bacan turned in a team-best 26 digs at the competition.
For the spring, Cochran paces the team with 105 kills, with Refenes 10 back at 95. Cochran also turned in a team-high 118 digs, followed by Burleson's 90. Refenes was the top Cardinal at the net with 44 total blocks, with Parrell and Westhof tying for second with 29 apiece.
