Huffman Named to Academic All-District Squad

Ball State senior softball player Alyssa Huffman (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg H.S.) has been selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Softball Second Team. Her selection marks the fourth-straight year a BSU softball player has been recognized on the all-district first or second team.
The academic all-district team is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from District V, which includes all colleges and universities in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To qualify, student-athletes much be of at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.20 or higher and be a starter or key reserve on their respective teams.
A starter in 54 of Ball State's 56 games this season, Huffman compiled a .222 batting average with 38 hits, including a pair of doubles. Her 16 runs scored tied for fourth, while her five stolen bases were second on the squad. From her shortstop position, Huffman accumulated 110 putouts and 124 assists for a .925 fielding percentage. In 22 Mid-American Conference games, she hit .232 with 16 hits plus tallied a .951 fielding percentage with 59 putouts and 58 assists.
A three-year letterwinner, Huffman joined the Ball State softball program as a manager in 2002. She earned a reserve spot on the team in 2003 and was a full-time starter in each of her final two seasons.
Huffman is a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete, a three-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll, a two-time recipient of a MAC Commissioner's Award for Academic Excellence and a 2005 recipient of a MAC Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. A special education major with a team-leading 3.84 grade-point average, Huffman has completed all course work and will do her student teaching this coming fall.
