Official Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) Release
Muncie, Ind. - - Ball State junior libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind./Burris H.S.) has been named the Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) National Player of the Week for Oct. 31 through Nov. 6. This is a first time in school history a Ball State women's volleyball player has picked up national player of the week honors.
"Amanda has been such a great addition to our team," said head coach Randy Litchfield. "Her play keeps getting better week in and week out. Right now, she is performing at as high a level as possible. In addition, her role as team captain is just as important as the huge numbers she is putting up on the court."
McCormick is only the second libero to earn the CVU.com honor the season, joining Princeton's Jenny McReynolds who was honored last week. In addition, she is just the third libero to ever receive the award, with Minnesota's Paula Gentil being recognized last year.
McCormick - - who was also named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week - - earns the honor after collecting a career-best 37 digs in BSU's 3-0 win at Toledo last Saturday. The 37 digs are the most in a three-game set in the nation this season and tie as the third-most in a three-game match in NCAA history.
In the three-game sweep of the Rockets, the 5-8 transfer from Nebraska started the evening posting 16 digs in the opening set. After notching eight digs in game two, McCormick followed with 13 in the third frame. In addition, she tallied three assists and a service ace versus the Rockets.
In the Cardinals' five-game thriller at Akron last Friday, McCormick tied a then career-high with 35 digs. McCormick also scored a service ace versus the Zips.
McCormick finished the week with 72 digs in nine games for a 9.0 digs-per-game average. She raised her MAC-leading DPG average from 5.95 to 6.22. In addition, her 6.22 DPG average currently ranks fourth in the nation.
McCormick begins the final week of the MAC regular season as the only player in the league with over 500 digs at 572. That total, combined with her 718 digs in two seasons at Nebraska, gives her 1,290 for her career. On the year, McCormick has recorded double-figure digs in 24 of BSU's 25 matches, with 20-or-more 16 times and 30-or-more on seven occasions.
McCormick enters Friday's contest at Eastern Michigan trying to become just the second player in school history to record 30-plus digs in three-straight matches. When BSU hosted EMU Oct. 22, McCormick tallied 34 digs in the four-game win.
